The head of FIFA, who has in the past said that maybe more people would pay attention to women’s football if they played in skimpier uniforms, tweeted:
International Women’s Day today – helps us recall the importance of women in society and in football – d3w.io/AtIs3q
— Joseph S Blatter (@SeppBlatter) March 8, 2012
‘Respect girls and women’ is a key message in our campaign to promote health and wellbeing among young people – d3w.io/w845dk
— Joseph S Blatter (@SeppBlatter) March 8, 2012
However Twitter users were quick to point out the seeming hypocrisy in Blatter’s comments:
@SeppBlatter this is coming from the idiot who said the only way to improve the womans game is to put them in tighter shorts #muppet

Clare Forrester, a Women’s Studies graduate from Berkshire said: “He’s pathetic, he’s using International Women’s Day to try and re-write history.
“Everyone knows what he said about women’s football, and those comments go some way to showing what he thinks about women in broader society.
“These tweets just make him even more of a joke than he already is,” she added.
