After suffering a multitude of fake accounts, Cowell gave in and announced his presence with the tweet: ‘It’s official, I know it’s taken a while. It’s really me! We’re live in 10 minutes. I’ll keep you posted. Lots of love #iamsimon’

Fans of his caustic criticism weren’t disappointed:

The 52-year-old took a swipe at his former Britain’s Got Talent co-star Piers Morgan by tweeting: “@piersmorgan look up the word deluded in your dictionary”.

He also poked fun at his fellow X Factor USA judges, Nicole Scherzinger, Paula Abdul and LA Reid by claiming he was winning in the “popularity poll”.

He wrote: “I love being on twitter. Thank you for allowing me to beat the other 3 in the popularity poll.

“Paula looked like she’d sucked on a lemon!”

It didn’t take him long to attract a crowd of more than 200,000 followers – a number that is growing by the hour.

The big question is who will be his next target?
