The undercover police officer shot to death while on duty will be farewelled in a combined family and police funeral on Thursday.
Details of Don Wilkinson’s funeral service were released this afternoon but many of the arrangements, including the service format, have yet to be decided.
Wilkinson, 47, and his partner, 44, were shot while working on a covert drug operation early last Thursday morning.
They were trying to install a tracking device on a car outside a Mangere house being used as a suspected P lab when they were disturbed by occupants of the house, chased 75m down the road and shot at.
The funeral will be held at Thursday at the Auckland Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, in the suburb of Parnell.
Superintendent Ted Cox, Commander of Auckland Metro Crime and Operations Support said Wilkinson’s family were working with police on the details.
A combined service was in accordance with the wishes of Wilkinson’s family, he said.
The service format would not be known in its entirety until Tuesday morning, he said.
Police have also spoken to a man they were seeking who was fishing or eeling in the creek behind Hain Ave around the time Wilkinson and his colleague were shot.
Wilkinson’s partner, whose name is suppressed by court order, is continuing to recover from his injuries and remains in hospital.
A 37-year-old man has been charged with murder and a 33-year-old man with assault over the incident. Both have appeared in Manukau District Court and will reappear next week.
