The Springboks’ 28-10 win kept their 22-year winning run over the Wallabies at Newlands in Cape Town alive as the hosts ran in three tries and 20 points in a blistering final 10 minutes.
The come-from-behind victory was anything but comfortable with the Aussies leading 10-8 until a Pat Lambie drop goal snatched the lead in the 70th minute.
Boks skipper Jean de Villiers crossed two minutes later, followed by Lambie in the 78th and De Villiers found the line again in the game’s last play to make the scoreline look even more flattering.
Earlier, the hosts opened the scoring after a dominant opening 20 minutes with flanker Marcell Coetzee finishing off a rolling maul for a five-pointer.
A Bernard Foley penalty and a runaway try from Adam Ashley-Cooper swung the game back in the tourists’ favour.
A penalty miss from the South Africans gave the Aussies hope that they would win their first game in Cape Town since 1992, but it wasn’t to be as their onslaught was still to come.
A bonus point win for the All Blacks over Argentina would all but nail down another title for the world champions.
