Teen pop sensation Gabriella Cilmi dressed for success in gold, US superstar Pink preferred white, while others went for traditional black rock chic on the Arias red carpet tonight.

Short dresses in bright colours worn with tights and towering chunky platform heels ruled in the fashion stakes.

Some stars debuted bold new hairstyles.

One half of the Veronicas, Jess Origliasso showed off her new blonde fringed do, while Kellie Hoggart from Hi-5 sported dreadlocks.

Fans went crazy for Pink, who took her time mingling with crowds, signing autographs and posing for photos.

One of the few to wear white, she donned a long, flowing maxi dress with jewels in her hair.

Cilmi was another fan favourite, wearing a glittering gold Julien Macdonald dress offset by silver necklaces, by Fiorina, along with black tights and ankle boots.

Natalie Bassingthwaighte, newly solo after leaving the Rogue Traders, dazzled in a strapless red jewel-encrusted balloon dress by Danish designer Marlene Birger and sparkling silver heels.

She told of how long it took to prepare.

“Today it took me forever because I needed my roots done, I needed my nails done so I just had a lot of prepping, so I just needed to get the basics done,” she said.

“To get ready usually takes a couple of hours.”

Brisbane band The Grates weren’t nominated for an award but showed they were a winner in the style department.

Singer Patience Hodgson wore a silver balloon dress, while drummer Alana Skyring soared above the rest in a dark frock made entirely of feathers from Sydney designer Sara Phillips.

She said it was beautiful but very warm in the hot Sydney sun outside Acer Arena.

“I discovered natural insulation but I suffer for fashion,” Skyring said.

“It’s my first time in big heels so I’m really going all out this year.”

Among the rock stars, federal treasurer Wayne Swan added a touch of politics to the chaos on the red carpet as he walked with his daughter Erinn from the band Nina May.

Red and black was the main colour theme for men.

Some wore funky hats while retro sunglasses continued their popularity from last year.

Electro duo The Presets sported formal dinner suits, while Cut Copy kept it casual with t-shirts and jeans.

But as usual not everyone hit the right fashion note.

MC Blue from the Potbelleez channelled Olivia Newton-John’s Physical film clip, wearing a purple one-shouldered leotard, aqua belt and blue tights.
