What: Every year on Guy Fawkes Night locals in Ottery St Mary soak 17 barrels in tar, set them on fire, then parade through the town to ward off evil spirits.
Where: Ottery St Mary, a small Devon town about 10 miles east of Exeter.
When: November 5.
Why: The ancient ritual of burning witches is said to be the root of the display, which dates all the way back to the 17th century.
Do it because: The fiery parade is one of England’s best local festivities – just beware of out-of-control flaming barrels and riotous drinking.
How much: Free. But only those born and bred in Ottery St Mary can carry the barrels.
