A search for a 17-year-old girl was continuing on Thursday after she was washed away while attempting to cross the Keurbos river near De Doorns, Western Cape police said.
The girl was with her mother when the incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon, said Inspector Bernadine Steyn.
Due to the strong current, divers and police were forced to continue the search along the river bank.
“The current is still too strong to utilise the diving unit. There’s still no trace of her but we will continue to search for her on land until we find her,”said Steyn.
The Western Cape has been hit by gale force winds and rain since Tuesday night, which ripped off roofs, flooded homes, closed roads, washed away bridges and damaged crops.
An SA Air Force Oryx helicopter was flying rescue missions in the Overberg region to airlift people trapped by rising flood waters.
