The nominations for this year’s awards were announced this morning at Bafta HQ in the West End with the hotly-tipped silent film The Artist remaining the one to beat this awards season as it collected, amongst others, nominations for Best Film, Director for Michel Hazanavicius, Leading Actor for Jean Dujardin and Leading Actress for Berenice Bejo.

Tinker, Tailor, which was resolutely ignored at the Golden Globes (it has been embraced in the UK as a fine piece of filmmaking but the US has not taken to it as much) picked up 11 nominations, including Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Tomas Alfredson for Director and Gary Oldman for Leading Actor.

The Artist and Tinker, Tailor will fight for the coveted Best Film category with the likes of The Descendants, Drive and The Help, with Outstanding British Film contested by My Week With Marilyn, Senna, Shame, Tinker, Tailor and We Need To Talk About Kevin.

Gary Oldman and Jean Dujardin are joined by the likes of Brad Pitt (Moneyball), George Clooney (The Descendants) and Michael Fassbender (Shame) in the Leading Actor category.

Berenice Bejo is joined by Golden Globe winner and frontrunner Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady), Michelle Williams (My Week With Marilyn), Tilda Swinton (We Need To Talk About Kevin) and Viola Davis (The Help) in the Leading Actress nominations.

The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony, hosted by Stephen Fry,  at the Royal Opera House on Feb 12.
