Susi has appeared in the show since it birth forth onto screens back in 2007 as Howard Wolowitz’s screaming, over-protective mother.

The Big Bang Theory has lost a beloved member today with the passing of Carol Ann Susi who hilariously and memorably voiced the role of Mrs Wolowitz,” reads a statement from CBS, Warner Bros TV and the show’s producers Chuck Lorre, Steven Molaro and Bill Prady.

“Unseen by viewers, the Mrs Wolowitz character became a bit of a mystery throughout the show’s eight seasons. What was not a mystery, however, was Carol Ann’s immense talent and comedic timing, which were on display during each unforgettable appearance.

“In addition to her talent, Carol Ann was a constant source of joy and kindness to all. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with her family during this time, and we will miss her greatly.”

It became a running joke in the show that she was heard but not seen – she was often to be heard yelling from downstairs in the Wolowitz home, screaming at Howard about his inadequacies, berating him for even the most tiny of perceived transgressions –  Susi was one of the most recognisable and loved voices in the show.

It is not yet known how the show will deal with her passing.

Susi though, has a TV and film career dating back to her first appearance in Kolchak: The Night Stalker in 1974 and encompassing more than 70 roles and appearances including the sweet girl-turned bar-girl dancer flick Coyote Ugly, the star studded 90s horror comedy Death Becomes Her. She had also appeared in some of the best loved and most celebrated TV shows of the last twenty years including Seinfeld, That ’70s Show, Married With Children and ER.
