Several Beijing-based tour operators claim the Chinese tourism bureau has asked them to stop taking travellers into Tibet, probably owing to recent unrest. An employee at the Tibet China International Tour Service told AFP: “The tourism bureau asked us to stop organising foreign groups to Tibet in late May. We don’t know when they will lift the ban.” The reported prohibition on foreign visitors comes after two Tibetans set fire to themselves outside the Jokhang temple in Lhasa, a major tourist site.
