Last year, Breivik attacked a summer youth camp organised by the governing Labour party on the island of Utoeya, after setting off a car bomb in the capital. Seventy-seven people died as a result of the two attacks.

He has confessed to the killings, but denies criminal responsibility.

After making his closed-fist salute he said he did not recognise the court .

“I do not recognise the Norwegian courts. You have received your mandate from political parties which support multiculturalism. I do not acknowledge the authority of the court.”

The 33-year-old is expected to plead not guilty and argue that the Labour party was a “legitimate target” because of its support for immigration and multiculturalism – policies he is adamant will bring about a Muslim takeover of Europe.
