Police began raiding houses across London today to make arrests in connection with the riots.

A senior Scotland Yard officer said over 100 warrants had been issued already in the capital, which saw three nights of rioting over the weekend and earlier this week.

Metropolitan Police Deputy Assistant Commissioner Steve Kavanagh said: "In the early hours of this morning we started knocking on doors to arrest people.”

"We have got more than 100 warrants which we will be working our way through over the coming hours and days.

"With so many officers on duty we want to use their time by going out there and arresting burglars, robbers and thieves — those people who cause concern and crime in our communities."

Police presence in London has been upped to 16,000 officers across the city for the last two nights, in light of the riots that have killed four people so far across the country and seen dozens of shops and homes burned down.

The Metropolitan Police has so far arrested 888 people over the riots since Saturday. Of this number, they have charged 371.

Arrests in other English cities have totaled over 300.

Hundreds of people are attending court in relation to the violence and looting, with courts in London working through the night to process the never-before-seen numbers of people charged.

Those who have appeared in court include an 11-year-old boy, a millionaire’s daughter, a teaching assistant and a lifeguard.

Riot charges from the Crown Court can carry a jail term of up to 10 years.
