The new song is the first taster of his forthcoming new album, The Next Day, which is his 30th studio record and his first album in ten years.
“Throwing shadows and avoiding the industry treadmill is very David Bowie despite his extraordinary track record that includes album sales in excess of 130m, not to mention his massive contributions in the area of art, fashion, style, sexual exploration and social commentary,” a Columbia press release said.
“It goes without saying that he has sold out stadiums and broken ticket records throughout the world during this most influential of careers.”
The album was recorded in New York with Bowie’s longtime collaborator Tony Visconti and has been released to mark the pop superstar’s 66th birthday.
Bowie shot to fame in the sixties with Space Oddity and found rock acclaim with Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars. He has morphed through various guises in the ensuing decades as he adopted various on-stage personalities and experimented with various musical genres, too.
