The worldwide map service has just updated its coverage to include images under the water. Users can now take a look around the ocean bed at the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, Apo Island in the Philippines, Maui’s Molokini crater and Hanauma Bay in Hawaii.
Using a special high-vis underwater camera, the map giants paired up with Catlin Seaview Survey to make it happen.
It’s “the next step in our quest to provide people with the most comprehensive, accurate and usable map of the world,” wrote Google Maps.
“This will allow the 99.9 percent of the population who have never been diving to go on a virtual dive for the first time,” the project director of Catlin Seaview Survey, Richard Vevers said. The surveyors have partnered with Google for the extensive project.
