It was reported by ABC News that the 25 year old man was harpooned by the cone snail while walking bare foot in shallow water near Whitehaven Beach.

Rescue services encountered difficulties trying to rescue the man due to the incoming tide. The pilot managed to land the rescue helicopter on a small area of sand and the stung man was transported by an inflatable dingy.

The RACQ CQ Rescue crewman Ethan Clissold said, “If we had any delays in getting him to the helicopter so the medical team could stabilise and administer pain relief, we would have needed to rethink our landing strategy, wasting precious time in the process.”

The man was taken to hospital and is a stable condition.

Over the past 90 years, 36 people have been killed by venom harpooned from the cone snail.
