The world No 144 Aussie, who earned his place in the tournament via a wild card, blasted an ace past Nadal in his first point of the match on the greatest stage in the sport, and ended it in the same way in four sets.
The 19-year-old won the first and third sets in a tie-break, but lost a break in the second set to keep the Spanish star in the match.
But in the fourth set, he played like he owned the joint and dominated Nadal to get his first break of the match and win the match.
John McEnroe compared the fearless teenager to a young Boris Becker after the match and said the talk about Krygios on the tennis circuit had been vindicated.
To get to the fourth round he’d defied nine match points in an epic five-setter against seeded Richard Gasquet to win his second round clash before overcoming Jiri Vesely in the third round.
His first serve ace in the match was followed up with a service game to love and in his first two service games he melted five aces past Nadal, and they were five of 37 he hit in the four sets.
Early on in the match BBC commentator McEnroe said: “It’s amazing that he doesn’t look the least wound up.”
He didn’t realise the half of it.
This is a confident customer we’re dealing with – at 40-0 down at 3-3 in the second set, he delivered the shot of the tournament, year probably, with a between the legs drop shot from the baseline.
