Tory MP Mark Pritchard unleashed a sweary tirade at the Speaker of the Commons, accusing him of behaving like “fucking royalty.”
The deputy chairman of the Tory backbench 1922 Committee let rip after the Speaker John Bercow ticked him off for not standing aside when they met in a narrow corridor.
Pritchard reportedly rejoined: “Mr Speaker, don’t point at me. I am not here to be abused by you.”
The Speaker then said, rather pompously: “You will obey the courtesies of the House!” to which Pritchard shouted his now infamous reply: “You are not fucking royalty, Mr Speaker!”
The Speaker then said, rather less pompously: “Well, a good morning to you, Sir.”
The pair had clashed earlier in the Commons when the Speaker refused to call on Pritchard for a question because he believed the Tory MP had not been present at the start of the sitting.
Pritchard had actually been present but had taken a quick toilet break. He was reportedly on his way to make an official complaint when he bumped into the Speaker in the hallway.
This is the second bust-up the two politicians have had. Last year Bercow told Pritchard off for “untoward” behaviour.
