Ja Rule today received a prison sentence of up to two years for gun charges dating back to 2007.
Dressed in a grey sweat suit, the rapper, 35, said "see y'all later" to fans and family as he was handcuffed and led away from the Lower Manhattan, New York courthouse.
The multi-platinum selling recording artist plead guilty to attempted criminal weapon possession last December after police found a gun in his car in 2007.
He could be released in as little as 18 months for good behaviour.
Police said they stopped the rap star's sports car for speeding and found a loaded, unregistered .40-caliber semiautomatic gun in a rear door.
Rule was charged under a New York law that generally bars people from having firearms outside their homes or workplaces.
‘Laws are laws,’ Ja Rule, real name Jeffrey Atkins, told a TV show on Monday.
‘There’s nothing I could really do but own up to the situation. You know, I try not to regret anything I do in life because you go through life and you do things and you man up to them.’
The married father-of-three has also admitted failing to pay more than £1.8million in tax and could be jailed for a further three years.
