If you’re on Facebook, you’re one in a billion. The social networking site’s founder Mark Zuckerberg today confirmed on his personal site that his creation has reached the magic milestone of active users.
‘Celebrating a billion people is very special to me,’ he wrote on his timeline. ‘It's a moment to honor the people we serve.’
‘Facebook isn't the first thing people have made to help us connect. We belong to a rich tradition of people making things that bring us together.’
Zuckerberg posted a video which he described as the first Facebook ‘brand video to express what our place is on this earth.’
‘We believe that the need to open up and connect is what makes us human. It's what brings us together. It's what brings meaning to our lives.’
He placed Facebook alongside the ‘everyday things people have always made to bring us together:
chairs, doorbells, airplanes, bridges, games.’
The young billionaire – who’s over $8billion less rich after Facebook’s share collapse since its public floatation – neglected to mention some other things that bring people together, such as posting drunken photos of your friends, easily sharing with people you don’t really want to talk to that you’ve hooked up or broken up with someone, legally stalking ex-girlfriends/boyfriends, and Farmville. It’s a nice sentiment, nonetheless.
