Workers on a Gold Coast rail project got a rude shock when they stumbled upon a crocodile on Queen St, Southport.

In an area more likely to have handbags made out of the critter, the rail crew were no doubt grateful it was barely 30cm long.

The juvenile croc was a long way from home as they rarely venture south of the tropics.

However, it's not unusual for a crocodile to escape captivity.

This one was captured quickly by the workers and taken to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary.
