Same sex couples should be allowed to marry, says Barack Obama. Quizzed by ABC news, the US president finally backed “gay and lesbians” being treated “fairly and equally”.

Cue a huge flurry of outcry, support, bewilderment and joy, as everybody from politicians to rights campaigners wanted to have their say after Obama opened the floodgates of acceptance.

Of course, what he said represents a cultural shift, a reflection of the views of society demanding equal treatment for all. But it’s long overdue. Everyone in the real world is already steps ahead of our leaders, who hesitate to support what’s right. Even our PM David Cameron is too scared.

Let’s just hope Obama’s as good as his word, and it wasn’t just for votes.

@Choire summed up the view from the gay community nicely in a tweet: “Thank god I got gay-married last year, when it was still cool and underground.”
