Prime Minister BoJo? Polls claims London's Mayor Boris Johnson could close Labour lead if elected Tory leader

Bumbling charmer Boris Johnson could wipe out the Labour party's lead over the Tories if elected, according to a new poll.

The London mayor has been touted as a potential replacement for Prime Minister David Cameron by political pundits for some time - and the Conservative party now have some evidence that he'd boost their popularity with voters.

YouGov surveyed 1,871 people for The Sun newspaper and found that 42% favoured Labour over the Conservatives at 31%. However, when asked how they would vote if Boris became leader 37% opted for the Tories putting them neck-and-neck with Labour at 38%.

"On every one of the eight leadership qualities that YouGov tests regularly, Boris Johnson outscores David Cameron, Ed Miliband and Nick Clegg by vast amounts." said Peter Kellner of YouGov.

But as Kellner admits, it's just a snapshot of opinion and could well be affected by the recent goodwill towards Boris following the success of London 2012 Olympic Games.

"As with any poll, our figures provide a snapshot of public attitudes this week, in the immediate aftermath of the Olympic Games. They do not predict how Boris might be viewed next year or at the next general election."
