London 2012: Chris Hoy wins sixth Olympic gold for Britain

"I always wanted to win gold in front of the home crowd," a jubilant Hoy told the BBC after winning his race.

Hoy was hoping to defend his Olympic keirin title with a victory tonight in what is the London 2012 Olympics final cycling event. The triumphant Brit was a good as his word and shot past the finish line just ahead of Germany's Maximilian Levy.

Hoy, 36, has said this will be his last Olympics although he may compete in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014.

Tonight’s win will be good moment to bow out of Olympic competition however, as Hoy now holds six Olympic gold medals, putting him ahead of Sir Steve Redgrave in the list of all-time British multiple Olympic medallists. He now equals Bradley Wiggins's record total of seven Olympic medals.

London 2012 velodrome tickets were hot property tonight and the stadium was filled with red, white and blue wigs and Union Jack flags as British fans cheered on Olympic hero Chris Hoy.
