Humiliated celebrity chef Antony Worrall Thompson will seek professional help after being caught shoplifting at Tesco in Henley-on-Thames, he has told The Express newspaper.

The 60-year-old insisted that he would see a psychiatrist after he was caught on camera stealing items from the supermarket on five separate occasions.

He told the paper that he was "embarrassed" by his actions, which saw him steal goods amounting to about £100.

On one occasion, Worrall Thompson paid £180 for three crates of champagne, but then stole £4-worth of other groceries, he said.

The Ready Steady Cook star claimed that his business and finances were not to blame, but did concede that he had been tired after working long hours.

He said: “I don’t know what broke the camel’s back and sent me over the edge. Why did I do it? I’ve been racking my brains to think what was going through my mind but I just don’t know.

"There is absolutely no reason. I’m totally embarrassed, apologetic and gutted for my family and friends.”

Worrall Thompson works at The Express as a food writer.
