If a sequel to Dumb And Dumber does go ahead, it won’t star Jim Carrey.
The Star he pulled out of the project, titled Dumb and Dumber To, after he grew "increasingly frustrated" by the lack enthusiasm shown by Warner Bros and New Line studios when it came to pushing the sequel foward.
He said: "I would have thought Dumb and Dumber To was a no-brainer - after all it's implied in the title."
The original was a massive success and remains one of the best-loved comedies of its time. It thrust the Farrelly Brothers into the comedy big league and a sequel seemed inevitable as New Line looked to repeat the film's profits.
Carrey, who was last criticised by former girlfriend Jenny McCarthy for not continuing to visit her son by a previous boyfriend, will next appear with Steve Carell in the comedy Burt Wonderstone.
