Education campaigner Malala Yousafzai starts school in Birmingham

The 15-year-old attended Edgebaston High School for girls this Tuesday mere weeks after being released from hospital following reconstructive surgery.

Malala, whose father has recently got a job in the UK working with the Pakistani consulate, attended year nine classes.

She is set to study the full curriculum and will select her GCSEs at the end of the year.

Malala said: "I am excited that today I have achieved my dream of going back to school. I want all girls in the world to have this basic opportunity.

"I miss my classmates from Pakistan very much but I am looking forward to meeting my teachers and making new friends here in Birmingham."

Malala was shot in the head on 9 October 2012, and was flown to the UK for emergency surgery.

Doctors discovered that the bullet had entered her skull just below her left eye and ran along her jaw, 'grazing her brain'.

Following surgery Malala made a strong recovery and was keen to get back to school as soon as possible.
