Westminster Magistrates Court heard today that footballer John Terry responded to taunts about his alleged affair by shouting a racial obscenity at Anton Ferdinand.
Terry, 31, allegedly called QPR's Ferdinand a "f***ing black c***" during an on-pitch bust up, as the pair traded insults.
"When someone brings your colour into it, it takes it to another level and it's very hurtful." Anton Ferdinand, brother of former England captain Rio Ferdinand, told the court.
Terry was responding to Ferdinand's taunt along the lines of "shagging ya mate's missus" - referring to an alleged affair Terry was having with a team mate's ex-girlfriend.
"It's handbags innit - it's what happens on the pitch" said Ferdinand immediately after the match. However, after being shown the footage afterwards by his girlfriend he began to think Terry had used racist language.
The case is being heard by Chief Magistrate Howard Riddle with no jury. The footage of the incident was shown to the court.
Terry made an official statement last year denying the claim, in which the footballer said "Whilst footballers are used to industrial language, using racist terms is completely unacceptable whatever situation. I was completely taken aback by this remark as I have never been accused of something like that and I did not take his remark lightly at all, and took strong offence to his suggestion."
