Actress Helena Bonham Carter has claimed that her long-time friend David Cameron is not right-wing and not even particularly conservative.

During an interview to promote her new film Dark Shadows - directed by Tim Burton and also starring Johnny Depp - Bonham Carter claimed that her chum of 15 years would be a member of the centre-left Democratic Party if he was in politics in the US.

Bonham Carter is famously liberal, so when asked about her friendship with the prime minister by the Sunday Times newspaper, she replied: "He's not that conservative, actually.

"I mean, he's not a right-wing person. If he was in America, he'd be a Democrat, and he's got a hilarious sense of humour, which nobody really knows about."

She did seem to immediately back pedal on her comments, however, adding: "I worried about 'He's not very conservative' being slung back at him like a boomerang from some back bench."
