While reporting on the ongoing unrest in Syria, rather than displaying an image for the United nations behind newsreader Sophie Raworth, the British broadcaster displayed a logo for the United Nations Space Command – from the video game Halo.

The gaffe was spotted instantly by the public who posted screengrabs from the news report online, forcing the embarrassed broadcaster to apologise.

“BBC News makes every effort to ensure the accuracy of all images broadcast, however very occasionally mistakes do happen.

"Unfortunately an incorrect logo was used during a segment on last week's News at One bulletin and we apologise to viewers for the mistake.

"The image was not broadcast in our later bulletins."
