A 2.5-tonne circus elephant caused pandemonium in County Cork, Ireland, yesterday after escaping from a travelling circus.

The 40-year-old elephant stunned locals as he wandered through the local retail park.

Courtney Circus had been parading its animals as part of a promotional event for the show when the elephant, known as Baby, escaped, galloping through the car park towards the town centre.

Eventually Baby was brought back under control by her handlers in the middle of a busy road junction, and was led back to the circus.

Baby's handlers claim that she rans away because she didn't want to have a shower, and said that no one was hurt in the incident.

Baby is back at the circus performing as normal.

Nelly the elephant however, remains at large.

Check out a video of the incident below.
