Gould was nominated to be one of the 8000 torch carriers whenteh torch arrives in the UK on May 18 by her granddaughter, and so when she was selected it came as quite a shock.
“I was delighted when she [daughter Alexandra] told me and when I heard I was definitely accepted I started to get really excited,” Gould said.
Gould, who moved to London from Poland as an infant worked as a seamstress before giving up her job to look after her two children, currently lives in a retirement home in Kenton, north west London. She expects the biggest challenge of her role in the Olympic torch ‘relay’ will be the weight of the torch itself though.
“I’ve seen the torch now – I think the design is lovely and it is fairly comfortable to hold,” she said.
“I can’t walk quick because I walk with a stick. About halfway I think I will have to change arms because of the weight of the thing!”
