“Nothing beats coming home with six Grammys and then coming to the BRITs and winning album of the year,” Adele said, who performed Rolling in the Deep at the awards show.

She also brought a smidgen of controversy to the evening when she ‘flipped the bird’ after she was interrupted by host James Corden during her acceptance speech.

She later explained that this was ‘to the suits’ and not to her fans, with a BRIT Awards spokesperson explaining: “The BRITs is a live event and we were overrunning and we had to move on.”

Other winners on the night were Coldplay (above), who nabbed Best British Group, Ed Sheeran (below) performed a storming rendition of A Team to a stunned O2 crowd and went on to pick up the Best British Breakthrough Act and Best British Male Solo Artist, beating Noel Gallagher and his High Flying Birds to the award.

Lana Del Ray was named International Breakthrough Act, Bruno Mars Best International Male Solo Artist and Rihanna (below) Best International Female Solo Artist. Emeli Sande also picked up the Critics Choice award as well.

Blur were saluted with the Outstanding Contribution To Music award, and closed the show with a greatest hits medley (below) that took in Girls & Boys, Song 2 and Parklife, featuring Phil Daniels, during their first appearance at the Brits in 17 years.
