There had been speculation of the England striker returning to the club that sold him for £35m (the eighth biggest deal in EPL history) in January 2011, but Newcastle had their bid for a loan agreement rejected by Liverpool.

The Guardian reported that Rogers would entertain an outright deal for the 1.91m Carroll, who has scored 11 goals in 56 appearances and although had a solid end-of-season patch, struggled for form throughout the rest of the year.

However, a permanent transfer would likely be costly for the Merseyside club, as there would be few, if any, clubs willing to pay anywhere near Carroll’s previous price.

Fulham and West Ham in England and Italy’s Milan are also rumoured to be interested in talking about a loan deal for the 23-year-old.
