Peter Siddle tore through the top order after an expensive early spell, before Mitchell Starc and James Pattinson, battered the tail off the pitch.
Pattinson had a hat trick ball, after he cleaned up Jonny Bairstow, who’d looked in good touch during his knock of 37, before Finn edged one through to Haddin.
With Anderson at the crease Pattinson mysteriously bowled his hat trick delivery 10 inches wide of off-stump, which Anderson was delighted to leave.
Swann was last to go, flipping a dolly to Phil Hughes at short cover.
Summing up the spirit of most England fans Hugh James tweeted: “An English batting collapse. Summer has truly begun.”
Michael Clarke will be delighted with Australia’s performance thus far, and England fans will be hoping the three lions first batting attempt will wake up a few of those in the media, and perhaps on the pitch, who thought the Baggy Green were here to make up the numbers.
