Despite moments of promise from England’s batsmen, none of them made 50 as Peter Siddle picked up 5-50 from his 14 overs, including the huge wickets of Joe Root, Johnathan Trott, Kevin Pietersen and Ian Bell.

After a slopping opening session, James Pattinson ended up with three wickets.

His opening partner Mitchell Starc had the same wayward ways early on, but took two scalps including that of Johnny Bairstow, who looked like he was set to mount a rearguard action before his off stump was skittled on 37.

Trott top scored on 48 and looked the goods before playing on.

Root (30), Bell (25) and Stuart Broad (24) all got starts, but could’t go on with it.
