At Home in Japan

Japanese homes have been fetishised by the West for their supposed minimalism and ‘otherness’. But have we romanticised the image of a neat, carefully constructed Japanese lifestyle?

This exhibition looks into the reality of how contemporary Japan lives through the ethnographic lens of Dr. Inge Daniels and examines a variety of aspects of the home – from decoration, display, furniture, eating, sleeping, and even hygiene. It will also feature photography by Susan Andrews (above). Get a mate to bring the sushi and make a day of it.

In light of the recent disaster in Japan, The Geffrye will be supporting the Red Cross appeal by donating a portion of the proceeds as well as collecting donations from visitors.
