The new rugby league Nines tournament at Eden Park, the Lantern Festival at Albert Park and Queens Wharf and the Eminem concert at Western Springs are all taking place between Thursday and Sunday.
With crowds likely to be the biggest since the 2011 Rugby World Cup, authorities are clamping down in a bid to avoid the chaos of last weekend’s Rugby Sevens tournament in Wellington, where more than 300 people were either tossed out of Westpac Stadium or arrested in the central city.
Inspector Gavin MacDonald said that police would not hesitate to hand out instant fines of up to NZ$250.
“It’s a huge weekend for the police,” he said. “The main message we want to put out is no intoxication will be tolerated.”
