Racing down a ski slope on two wheels doesn’t seem like the safest thing in the world, and it’s not. At the start of the race, competitors are crashing into each other, hitting the ground and sliding out, including Watkins, who is taken out by another racer
Unperturbed, he picks himself up, retrieves his bike, and then races down the pack, overtaking 96 others to finish 14th. Not without a load of other encounters with other bikes, that is.
The footage though, taken at the event at Alpe d’ Huez, in France racing down a ski slope, with steep drops off to either side, the pack littered witih out of control cyclists and crashed out racers, is something else.
