Tomic, the world number 52, won the first set 6-1 but Dan Evans, the world number 179, came back to stun the Aussie talent by clinching the next three sets to win 1-6, 6-3, 7-6, 6-3.

Evans becomes the first Brit this year to make it through to the third round of the US Open, with Andy Murray set to play Leonardo Mayer today for his place in the last 32.

Evans had already had to win three matches to make it in to the main draw for the tournament had already beaten the 11th seed Kei Nishikori earlier this week to set up his clash with Tomic.

He lost the opening set in just over 20 minutes, but found his form to fight his way back into the match and pull of a stunning victory that shocked the 20-year old Tomic.
