Rudd was questioned by a Christian man in the audience during the ABC TV session with the public, who referred to verses from the Bible on homosexuality and said that he and his friends thought Rudd was guilty of “chopping and changing your beliefs”.

“People don’t choose their sexuality, they are born that way.” said the Prime Minister, who is facing tough competition from the Liberal party’s Tony Abbot in the run up to this month’s federal election.

“The idea this is somehow an abnormal condition is wrong.”

Rudd said his Christian values led him to believe that he should follow beliefs of “one of universal love” and referred to his position on the issue that he posted on his blog in May this year.

“I mean, for goodness sake, the human condition and social conditions change. What is the central principle of the new testament? It is one of universal love, loving your fellow man,” said Rudd, explaining his views as a fellow Christian.
