Material leaked by National Security Agency (NSA) whistleblower Edward Snowden alleges that Australian intelligence tried to listen in on phone calls on one occasion and tracked the activity of his phone on several others in August 2009.

The Indonesian first lady and Vice President Boediono are also alleged to have been targeted.

The allegations have been reported by ABC network and Guardian newspaper in Australia.

The leaked documents appear to show a list of Indonesian ‘leadership targets’. As a result of the release of this information, Indonesia summoned Australia’s ambassador after reports emerged that the Australian Embassy in Jakarta may have been complicit in this as well as being used as a base from which certain activites could be carried out.

“This is an unfriendly, unbecoming act between strategic partners,” said Indonesian Finance Minister Marty Natalegawa.
