The climbers were last seen in the Puente del Inca region of Argentina about 1400kn west of Buenos Aires, which is a naturally formed arching bridge over a river.
A spokesperson from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said its consulate in Buenos Aires had been informed of the incident.
“We are aware of media reports that eight Australians have reportedly been affected by the landslides in the Puente del Inca region of Argentina, she said.
“The Australian Embassy in Buenos Aires is contacting local authorities to determine their whereabouts and check on their welfare.”
It has been reported that the Australian climbers tried to get around path controls to reach the base of Mount Aconcagua, the highest mountain in the Americas.
Heavy rains that caused several landslides and rockfalls have left hundreds of people stranded in the Mendoza province. Hundreds more have been evacuated, but masses of mud and rocks have now blocked roads leading to and from Puente del Inca.
