Hostage drama Argo, directed by and starring Ben Affleck won Best Director and Best Drama, beating out Steven Spielberg’s award season fave Lincoln.
“I want to thank my wife who is the reason why I’m standing here,” Affleck said in his acceptance speech of his partner Jennifer Garner.
Affleck’s success though may be slightly bittersweet. The Golden Globes are widely recognised as an indicator of who will win at the Oscars but Affleck has been overlooked and not received a Best Director nomination for this year’s Golden Baldies.
Elsewhere, Daniel Day Lewis won Best Actor for his role as Abraham Lincoln in Steven Spielberg’s film about the US president, with Jessica Chastain winning Best Actress, Motion Picture Drama for her role in Zero Dark Thirty.
Damian Lewis won Best Actor, TV Drama for his role in the highly-praised Homeland, and Maggie Smith won Best Supporting Actress, Series, Miniseries of TV Movie for her role in ITV’s Downton Abbey, with Adele’s Bond song for latest, record-breaking 007 flick Skyfall, nabbing Best Original Song, Motion Picture.
Hugh Jackman also won Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for his turn as Jean Valjean in To Hooper’s Les Miserables.
