Britons admit to drinking at least 3billion litres of alcohol less than is being bought every year, according to new research.

These figures mean eight in ten people may be exceeding the daily recommended levels for safe drinking – and half of the country would be classified as binge-drinkers.

In surprising (or is it?) results, it was shown that well-off women who live in the south of England were the worst offenders. Desperate housewife syndrome, no doubt.

Researcher Sadie Boniface, from University College London, said: “The results have enormous implications for public health.

Last year, alcohol accounted for 8,748 deaths in Britain, while problem drinking costs the country up to $35billion a year.

Chief executive of Addaction, Simon Antrobus, said the research was a “stark reminder of the extent of alcohol misuse in Britain”.
