Day two was all the Black Caps’ after the first day was lost to rain, as spinner Martin (4-43) and Neil Wagner (4-42) made short work of the Ashes favourites, who were bowled out for 167, their lowest score ever batting first against the Kiwis.

Jonathan Trott was the only Englishman to put up a fight with 45 as his teammates folded with a plethora of poor shot selections.

Rutherford finished the day 77 not out, with Peter Fulton also unbeaten on 46, leaving them 0-131 and trailing by just 36.

They’ll be key to turn the screws on the out-of-sorts tourists, who were considered unbackable at the start of the series that will lead into two Ashes series.

England threw six bowlers at Rutherford and Fulton, who showed the application England couldn’t and valued their wicket.
