Carson passed away surrounded by his friends and family at his home in Blackpool, after struggling with stomach cancer in recent years.
His funeral will be held in his hometown of Belfast according to sources.
Carson had a successful operation in 2010 to remove cancerous tissue from his stomach.
“I have had a bad five years,” Carson told the BBC recently.
“First it was the pacemaker, then it was a new knee, then I had a hernia and then of course I had this problem.”
A statement from Carson’s family said: “Husband, father, Gaga and comedian set off for his final gig today,
“He went peacefully at his home in Blackpool surrounded by his greatest fans – his extended family. We will be taking him home to Belfast to lay him to rest and celebrate his joyful life.
“It’s quieter down here now. God help them up there!”
Carson was hailed as one of TV comedy’s longest standing survivors after originally finding fame by winning Opportunity Knocks.
