The Dalai Lama made a surprise appearance on Australian MasterChef yesterday as a guest judge.

Contestants made lunch for the Tibetan spiritual leader, but he would not rate their dishes because he said it would go against his Buddhist beliefs.

The Dalai Lama was taking a break from his official duties during a visit to Australia.

Speaking of the food he tasted on MasterChef, he said: “They all had a special taste and beauty.”

He particularly liked a Sri Lankan curry with roti bread but he wasn't so keen on gnocchi, an Italian dumpling.

Speaking about fine dining, the Dalai Lama said: “My knowledge of these things is very limited. Whatever I get I accept.

“As a Buddhist monk it is not right to prefer this food or that food.”

He revealed that he loved cheese, bread, tofu, mushrooms, desserts and coriander.
