New laws will be announced today to crack down on violent pornography.
“We are closing the loophole – making it a criminal offence to possess internet pornography that depicts rape,” says Cameron.
Rape Crisis South London representative Fiona Elvines told The Guardian: “The government today has made a significant step forward in preventing rapists using rape pornography to legitimise and strategise their crimes and, more broadly, in challenging the eroticisation of violence against women and girls.”
“I’m not making this speech because I want to moralise or scaremonger, but because I feel profoundly as a politician, and as a father, that the time for action has come. This is, quite simply, about how we protect our children and their innocence,” Cameron will tell the nation, according to the Daily Mail.
Computer users across the UK will be contacted by their internet service providers and asked if they would like to opt in or out of online porn access.
Cameron today promises “One click to protect your whole home and keep your children safe.”
However, some critics have suggested that relying on service providers to give a ‘default on’ setting can make parents complacent – and technology-savvy kids will be more than capable of turning off the filters.
A leaked letter from government sources, which uses the phrase “without changing what you’re offering” suggested that little is expected to change from the current “active choice +” option for ISP’s customers.
