Residents reported feeling the 3.2 magnitude tremor just after 7am.
The quake lasted several minutes and was reportedly also felt in Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire.
There have been no injuries or damage reported so far.
The British Geological Survey said the UK is expected to experience a magnitude 5 earthquake once every 10-20 years.
