The actor launched legal action against News Group Newspapers after an article published in November 2010 reported McFadden’s arrest for “alleged harassment to cause violence”.
David Price QC, for McFadden, said that while the actor was not charged and the case was closed by police, the News of the World’s article “may have been understood to suggest that there were reasonable grounds to suspect that he was guilty”.
Lawyer Brid Jordan, for News Group Newspapers, apologised for the article. The newspaper has agreed to pay damages and McFadden’s legal costs.
McFadden said of the case: “I’m glad it’s all over.”
